Hey, I need to connect the internet using only modem AT commands. I tried doing this with hyperterminal:

atdt6390031 (my ISP's #)
And then I entered my username & password correctly.

Hyperterminal's prompt responded by saying that I entered a PPP session, what my IP addr. was, etc.

However, whenever I try to open a web page in MSIE, Netscape, or any other web browser, it responds by saying that I am not connected, and that I need to do so. Either that, or another prompt comes up, asking me to choose from a list of connections.
I cannot telnet, or ftp, or anything, am I missing something?

That little icon in the lower right corner with the 2 computers that blinks when sending data over the modem2modem connection is not there. Do I need this?

Perhaps there is a way to *trick* Win XP and put it in an 'online' state so I can see my web pages & stuff?
I am using a regular old POTS dial-up modem. (PCTel)

If anyone can help me, I greatly appreciate it.

(And: Is it possible to run Hyper Terminal from the command line?
Is it possible to boot to XP, and have just a command line (no GUI, kind of looks like DOS)?)

My thanks for your time,
Joel

Run the Internet Connection Wizard to configure a dial up connection to use with Internet Explorer. Hyperterminal is definitely not the way to do it.

The answer to your last question is No. There is no DOS in windows XP. You can get a command line only but that is the Recovery Console that is obtained from the Windows XP boot disk.

If you don't mind me asking...
"I need to connect the internet using only modem AT commands."...Why?

And then you go on to state..."However, whenever I try to open a web page in MSIE,"...would you expect the hyperterminal connection to allow you to use IE?

Hyperterminal (which I know little about) does not provide a graphical user interface. It is only text.

Using Hyperterminal you could dial up a friends machine and transfer a file that way.

I don't know how you could incorporate the use of your ISP to do any of the things you expressed.

What is it that you are you trying to do; gain access to a site that you have been banned or something like that? What do you have in mind?

Well, I need to use multiple operating systems and the internet at the same time. For some of the operating systems that I have, you can only send your modem AT commands (no internet connection wizard yet).

The only operating system that needs the user to send AT commands for the Modem is MS-DOS. Every version of Windows since Windows 95 has an Internet Connection Wizard. Hyper Terminal is a Windows application

As it is impossible to run two OSs concurrently, yet, I can't see what the problem is. What other OSs are you running.

There is a application called Virtual PC that will allow multiple OS's on Windows XP
