Comment:

Running WinXP Home.
Fails to complete boot sequence, hangs before entering logon screen.
Booted from WinXPPro setup disk, (PC provided with XPHome as "ghost" image only), entered recovery console.
Logged on as "local administrator".
Try to navigate to "Documents and Settings" and get "Access denied".
Need to recover some files from own directories, eg Outlook .pst files.
What can I do now?
If I try installing from XP Pro CD will this lose my data or will the existing security structures be preserved and access to existing data maintained?
Help please!!!!

Boot from the CD and go past the recovery console to the install menu. Select REPAIR THE EXISTING INSTALLATION. You will have to do all the ms updates but your data will be intact. Good luck.
