I have a STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error} The windows Logon Process system process terminated unexpectedly ....

I've looked all over the internet. I can't find a way to repair the error, so I just wanted to copy my files and reformat the computer.

I can only go to the recovery console. I when I try to get in my documents, I get an access denied message.

I can dir c:\docume~1

I can’t cd c:\docume~1

... have you tried this:

1. Boot using your winxp cd.

2. Enter recovery console.

3. at the command prompt go to C:/windows/system32

4. next type: copy userinit.exe wsaupdater.exe

5. exit and reboot normally... if by a fluke you can logon...

6. run regedit

7. find the Userinit key in:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\

8. modify the entry:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\wsaupdater.exe

so that it reads:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\userinit.exe

... worth a try as a last resort!

I can't into bois to do a tempory boot. I've tried F everything and del, but nothing gets me into Bois.

I've try changing from c:\ to d:\ , but when I enter cd d:\ it just shows c:\ again. I've tried d:\setup.exe it says command not recognized.

Any suggestion on how to boot from a cd?

.. I was under the impression that you were @ recovery console as you could'nt logon!... aswell ... if you can logon forget response number 2 ...CANCEL

... some adaware programs may remove or quarantine wsaupdater.exe thinking that it's harmful ... so you ca'nt logon!...response2 was a fix for that!

I've tried f everything before, but I just F2 repeatedly and it worked.

You have just opened up so many more options to me.

Thank You so much!

Here's my problem now. I set it to boot from cd. rebooted it and it said press any key to boot from cd, so I did.

It give me the same STOP: c000021a message.

The cd I'm using is Dell's (it reads)

Operating System
Already Installed on Your Computer
Reinstallation CD
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2

Do you have any suggestions?

When the Dell splash screen appears during the computer startup process, press and hold <Ctrl> and then press <F11>. Then, release both keys at the same time.
NOTE: Some systems like Inspiron Mini 9 (910) do not support System Restore as they do not have <F11> nor any substitute.

In the Dell PC Restore by Symantec window, click Restore. Alternatively, press <Tab> to highlight Restore, and then press <Enter>.

... thats if the restore partition exists!

... you will lose all your pic's, love letters and data if you hav'nt backed them up!

... but it should restore you laptop back to factory condition ... as new!

All fixed.

Ubuntu worked wonderfully. It took a really long time to download, but it was worth it. Once I followed the direction from the ubuntu site on how to burn the cd and burnt it correctly, it booted my computer right up. I was able to copy everything to a flashdrive.

Last time my computer was working AVG was attacking a file called ws2_32.dll. I was able to see that it no long existed. I copied it from another computer and pasted it back to C:\windows\system32\. Rebooted the computer and it started right up.

Thanks Mavis007! ! ! ! ! !

I would highly reccommand for everyone to keep a cd of Ubuntu handly. It's a life saver.
