I guess you still have the motherboard disc which had the AC installation prog. You could try reinstalling that.

I upgraded from Win2000 to XP and I did notice that the AC97 drivers were not compatible. I removed them and rebooted - no change. I'm running a Sis735 chipset and had to go to download the correct drivers (since my motherboard CD didn't have drivers for XP). I'd like to get you the link but I'm at work and can't remember my motherboard manufacturer...

i bought a brand new laptop in early december, it's a compaq pressario 700 my os is windows XP and my sound card is a VIA AC'97 audio adapter. until today everything was fine, good quality of sound etc... really no problem. i set up the game "driver" on this laptop: everything was fine for 2 days then no sound anymore at all! i tried uninstalling the sound card then reinstalling it: nothing. i did the same with my drivers: nothing then i saved all my files and settings (a CD burner is really usefull!!!lol) and finally restored my windows XP. i reinstalled everything except the game "driver" then guess what: still no sound!
If someone has an idea about this please e-mail me!
PS: i hope you won't pay attention to my english skills because I'm french lol!

Hi

I just upgraded my comp, bought a new Asus P4B M/B with Avance AC'97 (ALC201) audio chip onboard. I installed windows XP Professional and have been having problem getting the Avance AC97 sound driver to work.

WinXP didn't detect the correct driver for the Avance AC'97 but installed some type of standard audio codec. There is, however, no sound being heard, and all audio components in the Sound and Multimedia are grayed. I downloaded the new AC'97 driver for windows XP at Asus website, but after updating the driver, I got a yellow exclamation mark on the Avance AC'97. I doubled clicked on it to see its properties and saw a line saying "the device cannot start (code 10)". I downloaded the driver from Avance website, I still got the same problem.

I have been searching for help everywhere on the net and tried every possible thing I could, but haven't got successful. Does anyone know how to fix this problem? PLEASE HELP!! Someone suggested to use CMI8738 driver....for AC97 chip? Will this really work? If anyone knows how to get this Avance AC97 to work with winXP, please help me. Kindly thank you!
