I have found that my computer is infected with the about:blank hijacker. I have been trying to remove it, but I cannot find any free programs that remove it. Everything I have tried tells me I have to register and buy the program to remove the problem. Does anyone know how I can remove this problem without paying a bunch of money?

about blank is a derivative of coolwebsearch and is a bit difficult to remove. The key to removal is to shut down system restore and use the programs in "safe mode"

Spybot S& D has been able to get rid of this in the past

http://www.safer-networking.org/en/...

Sometimes it leaves some traces and this last version of CWshredder can also remove any parts of this as well as just about any free anti-virus program

************************************
Turn off system restore:

start > R. click "my computer" > properties > system restore tab and put a tick in the turn off system restore box then apply and ok out.

Remember to remove the tick to turn it back on afterwards
*****************************************
To enter safe mode :
restart the computer and toggle the F8 key immediately till the start page shows up...if the computer restarts in windows let it come all the way up and then restart again repeating toggling the F* key immediately.

Well today I went into safe mode and ran Spybot S&D and the CWS Shredder you recommended. It did not solve the problem. It cleaned up a couple other things, but not the about:blank.

Ive been doing some research and it seems like the problem I am having is different from what everyone else describes. Everything Ive seen it changes the home page and doesnt let you change it back, while mine just pops up a security warning on many websites, but not every website.

Is there anything else I can try to solve this? Thanks everyone for the advice
