I have a computer running windows xp home edition. i have 2 harddrives. recently i was given windows xp pro as a present. this is what i intend to do.

1) using xp pro's wizard, i will format my C: which is the drive where xp home is installed.

2)then i will install xp pro.

3) i will not format D: because i am not installing xp pro there.

4)D: contains no system files at all, it is 100% storage (ie homework, files, cd images but no programs at all).

my question is, once i have installed xp pro, will my D: be recognised as having its original contents(ie all my homework and cd images)or will it be empty? thanks in advance, cedric

ok, assuming HD D is a seperate HD. your fine. dont format D and only work with C and your files on D will be fine. thats how most admins runs systems. put all personal data on another drive(seperate or partitioned) and install OS and programs on C drive. this is a great way to avoid data loss with OS failures.

as a follow up, make sure your format C only, WInXP likes to default to the drive with the most capacity. so make sure the wizard does not defualt to the D drive someplace.

Further to that. There is no need to format the drive at all. Just insert your CP Pro disk an do an upgrade of XP Home. That way all your settings and installations will be preserved.

Formating and doing a clean install will mean that you will have to reinstall all you applications and drivers.

It also means you will have a terribly buggy system, do NOT upgrade.

Hooner,

If it were Win98/ME/2000 to XP I would agree with you. But this is XP Home to XP Prof. Virtually the same OS with a few additions.

Move ahead soldier nothing to worry about...careful note will show you that WINXP installation prompts for the partition to be formatted, etc., So even if you are on the same HDD with two partitions, dont worry and select the primary partition and format and install. It will do no harm to the data in D.

my system is rather buggy already anyway so i think ill do a clean install. glad to know that there are so many kind users out there. d is a seperate HD from C, and i didnt partition any of them so there are only 2 drives. now i can go ahead with installing xp pro on my c: alone. thankyou!
