Device Manger - Driver Update on the PCI Device, make sure you are on line and it will search Windows Update.

FYI USB2 Drivers are included in SP1 and later

You don't need any extra drivers for USB 2 when using WinXP. What you do need is SP1 or better.

Hi folks,

Tks for your advice.

The device is "NVIDIA USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller" added on PCI slot for the USB ports on the case.

DO you have at least SP1 installed on your computer? Do you have the MBoard chipset drivers installed? If not, find them here.

Hi folks,

Further to my late posting.

Plugin a USB2.0 thumb drive on the USB port of the mobo. WinXP detected it assigning it as Drive-G. I can file the thum drive on Desktop. Files on the thumb drive can be read.

Plugin a USB2.0 enclosure (external HD). WinXP also detected it but with following warning popup;
The USB Mass Storage Device will function at reduced speed. You must add a HI-SPEED USB Host Controller to this computer to obtain max performance
I can't find this drive on Desktop. I think the problem is here.

Do you KNOW what SP1 is? Service Pack 1. That is updates to the original WinXP. Depending on When you got your WinXP CD it may or may not include SP1 or even SP2. Without SP1 USB 2 won't work.

Hi OtheHill,

After installing the drivers on the CD coming with the USB enclosure, problem solved. One thing I can't resolve. Without installing the driver, USB 2.0 thumb drive can work on this WinXP w/o problem but NOT the USB enclosure.

This is a very old version of WinXP tracing back to 1999/2000 w/o service packs. I only run it as reference on building new PC in case of hardware problem. I installed WinXP on this Linux box running AMD Athlon64 >1 year ago only to settle a dispute on the problem of ASUS motherboard. I found a problem on the mobo on installing Gentoo Linux but the agent of ASUS here rejected it saying that they don't support Linux compelling me installing WinXP to show them the problem. Finally they changed another mobo. I applied this tactic several times before on hardware dispute. The hardware vendor can't deny that they don't support Linux to escape liability. If they can make Windows running on their hardware I can run Linux/Unix on it w/o their support.

I found the problem of USB driver one year ago. I just left it there because I don't run Windows. Curiosity made me bringing up this problem.

I'll erase WinXP later and reinstall it on an AMD Athlon64 dual core box running ASUS M2N-E mobo to see what will happen.

Thanks again for your advice.

IF your very old version of WinXP is a legal version why don't you upgrade to SP2 and the USB problem would be solved. In addition to original WinXP not supporting USB 2.0 it also didn't support 48bit LBA. FYI that is for drives larger than 127GB. This was done by design.

Hi OtheHill,

Performed test on AMD64 dual core PC. There were 8 big yellow question marks found on Divice Manager after installing WinXP. Download/Installed SP2 on Internet. The number of the said question marks was reduced to 4. After installing the drivers on the CD packed with the mobo only the PCI-device was left behind marked with a big yellow quesiton mark. The final probem disappeared after installing the drivers on the CD packed with the USB enclosure.

It still relied on the drivers of the CDs.
