About DAT files?

I saw an older post about viewing DAT files and have a similar issue now.
In MY case, the DAT file is a 4.5 MB video file. It appears in the status bar as a WMV file, but as it's playing (in Windows Media Player) it's identified as an MOV file. Quick time can't open it, and Media Player won't whether it has a WMV, MPG, or AVI extension.
