Aborted XP Reinst to recover forgotten files?

Specs: Windows XP, AMD Sepron / V2000 Presario
I need to know if I can recover my files.
After a spyware attack, my computer could not boot properly. (Compaq V2000 Presario) -- i could not find the recovery disk for this, so I borrowed a German (! stupid me) Windows XP CD to see if I could do something with it. My fear is that, by starting a setup for Windows XP, my files are all gone. I have stopped installing at step 4/5 of the setup process (the actual installing of windows). Can anyone give me any insight on whether or not my files can be recovered, and how I could figure out if my files are still on my computer? I am in the process of buying a new computer, so I could care less about the computer itself, but I would like to recover my valuable files. If anyone can help, that'd be great. PS -- I did order a recovery cd today to see if that would help. I will receive it in a few days, if that helps.

It depends upon what files you are talking about. Did you format the drive before the installation or were you doing a repair install? Were these files on the same partition as the operating system. If they were valuable, you should have backed them up all along. Get the new disk and reinstall and see what that brings.

You can boot directly to a Linux CD (without installing) and recover files that way first.
