a virus has taken over my browser searches and is redirecting - I have tried many anti-virus methods but cannot remove it - it resides in the memory and system files I believe

Getting rid of malware, viruses and rootkits are never easy. If you try a few removal tools and they don't work, consider clean installs from the original disks. It is the only proven way to fully remove them. Also you are getting these usually because you are not doing all that you can to prevent them. Simple things can make a big difference in security. Learn and use as many as you can to prevent this.

Try running your scans from safe mode. If that doesn't work, download a bootable rescue CD.
