Recently I bought a USB TV tuner which works very well however I have noticed that certain function buttons like "Burn" do not exist in the programme as they do in the Help file.

I received excellent help from the programmes' Help desk who after some correspondence established that I had an OEM version and that facility does not exist on it.

I was under the impression that an OEM product could only be sold with other hardware like a laptop or desktop etc. and that it should not be sold by itself.

What exactly are the conditions for the sale of OEM products?

It depends on the manufacturer, but usually it needs to be sold with qualifing hardware.

In your case, the USB tuner.

OEM hardware is not the same as OEM versions of software.

The term is used loosely and usually refers to NON RETAIL packaging or not packaging. The vendor buys in bulk and may or may not supply a box, cables, documentation, drivers, etc.

Sometimes the hardware may be a different version of the same general model.

Thanks to all for the replies. Actually RTAdams89 your reply makes sense because the USB is actually the "Hardware." To explain further the device was discounted at a local store so the retailer must have known it was not a full version and conveniently never told me. Silly me, I'll ask questions next time.

Actually, you purchased the TV Tuner (hardware) which is a fully functioning device. As part of the bundle, you received an OEM version of the software. You got exactly what you paid for.

It's no different from buying a CD/DVD burner, and receiving an OEM version of Nero with it. You very rarely get full versions, bundled with hardware.

You could always purchase a full version of the software, if you want all the features to be available.

Thank you Sci-Guy, it all makes sense now. It is a good programme so buying the full version is an attractive idea.
