It's good for me to have DVDs around, for when you need to get stuff off your harddrive that's just taking up space.

Recently I ran out of DVDs in a pack so I went out and bought a new one, and they didn't work. I bought another pack of a different brand just in case that one was faulty, but it didn't work either.

Everything else seems to be working. It reads and writes CDs fine, and it still reads DVD, it just won't write to them.

Now I don't know what I'm going to do. I have two packs of DVDs and none of them work. Is it a problem with the discs? Or could it be a problem with my DVD drive?

I've always used DVD-R if that helps, but I'm not sure if it can use the +R. Also the DVD drive came with the PC so I'm not sure what brand it is or anything.

You should get some idea of the brand by looking in Device Manager. If not a brand name, just post back with what's listed under "DVD/CD-Rom Drives".

If DVD-R have worked in the past for you, I'd stick with them. If the two packs you bought were DVD+R, that could well be the problem. Most burners support one or the other, but not both.

Okay, I looked in the device manager. The drive is about as generic as it comes I bet. It says:
nec dvd rw nd 2500a

I also have one of those virtual CD/DVD drive programs, but it never bothered anything.

I double checked those packs. Both of the DVDs I bought are -R like I always used. But they do have different speeds labeled on them, though I don't know what that means.

Does your motherboard have the nForce2 chipset? If so, remove the nVidia IDE drivers and use the Microsoft drivers instead. The nVidia IDE drivers are known to cause problems with some burners.

Also, if you are using Nero, you should know that the only version that officially supports the NEC ND2500A is version 5.5.10.56. You can get it from here (FTP site). Before you install it, go to the Ahead website, download Nero Cleantools and run it. This will completely remove all previous Nero versions and registry entries from your PC. Once that's done you can install Nero 5.5.10.56.

Another thing that might be causing problems is if you are using the Adaptec ASPI. Nero works better with its own ASPI (NeroASPI). This doesn't apply if you're using a burning program other than Nero.

If none of the above is applicable, post back and I'll offer further advice. If any of the above solves your problem, post back and let us know, so others with this problem can find the solution.

Please let us know if you found someone's advice to be helpful.
