All of a sudden my PC has become very slow and I have the following problems

1.Internet Icon in notification area not seen even after getting connected. Internet is working fine
2. USB icon in notification area not seen even after getting connected to USB. But can use the USB
3. Most of the softwares are not functioning eg, Nero, and many others . I tried to uninstall and re install each and every software but in vain
4. Explorer Window ( Windows +E) takes very very long time to open
5. System restore not functioning
6. Device Manager is blank . ( ie right click My Computer and Mangage)

I scanned the PC using my Norton Antivirus , Spybot Search and Destroy etc
Still the problem persists.

Could this be a registry problem?? If so how do I rectify??

Please help

Thanks in Advance
Telemachus

It's a lot more than a mere registry problem and the problems you have are too intertwined to be fixed. In other words, your Windows is totally instabled.

The simple thing you can do in cases like this is to (according to a recent M$ recommendation):

1) swallow the bitter pills,
2) reformat the HD for a clean slate and
3) reinstall Windows.

Can I reinstall without loosing data??

Unfortunately you will lose all data once you reformat the hard drive. You should burn what is dear to you to a CD or just copy them over to external USB hard drive.

The method of reinstalling Windows is simple.

1) Pop in your Windows installation CD,
2) Boot to BIOS to in order to Boot to CDROM
3) Windows will automatically start the installation based on user interactions.

A blank Device Manager happens when
"Plug and Play" Service is not running.
Check to see if it is.

After trying the suggestion in response 5, you could try system restore, though that will probably not work in your case. But before reformatting the hard drive and reinstalling Windows, I would try a repair installation of Windows. Then your data and programs will be preserved, though you will have to redo the Windows updates.

Hello - virus scans?
Let's use a real virus scanner instead of Norton eh.

Medion MIM 2080
Toshiba T2130CT
Macintosh Performa 450

All working wonderfully.
