If it's an old drive it might be kinda slow getting up to speed. I had a similar problem. I disabled fast boot in the bios and set the floppy and optical drive ahead of the hard drive in the boot sequence. That fixed it for me.

Read/Write errors are not always detected by Diagnostic Software. Are you hearing clicking noises from HDD?
Dont take chances with your data, back up Now. Then determine if the HDD IS STILL UNDER WARRANTY. contact Seagate Support.
There is nothing to learn from someone who already agrees with you.

its a reletavley new drive 06/06/08 and i have not heard any clicking/clunking noises from the drive all i have heard is the fans spinning on my case

i ran the recovery console from me windows CD and ran chkdsk and it said it found one or more errors on the volume. how do i repair/recover these errors ?

If you run 'chkdsk /F', it's 'supposed' to fix any errors. Running 'chkdsk /R' will scan the disk for bad clusters, and if it finds any, it will reassign them to a spare location on the drive.
The second test take quite a while on a large drive. A few bad sectors is normally nothing to be too concerned about. But If you start getting 'new' bad sectors, then the drive might be getting ready to go belly up.
I hope that you do regular backups.

i invested in a Maxtor basics 1.5TB external drive for such emergencies
