A disc read error occurred

Microsoft Windows xp media center 2005

Specs: Windows XP MCE 2005
My PC is old but most components have been upgraded. The system was working fine then one day on power up, after the manufacturers boot screen, it said "a disc read error occurred." I removed the drive and placed it in a caddy and attached it to my laptop and backed up my files. I therefore assumed the drive is fine. Next I put the drive back in the PC and tried booting with the Windows CD, Windows repair and fresh install all of wich fail as each time the system restarts the same messgae is displayed. Help! Is the drive faulty or is there a problem with the motherboard,BIOS...

Try going through this guide, removing the partition first
Note: XP Pro and XP MCE are the same guide:

Microsoft's Windows XP Professional Repair Install step by step (* Including Delete Partition)

* Warning deleting the Partition will remove all User data and Windows system files

Download a hard drive diagnostic tool from the drive maker and run it from a bootable floppy or CD
