I caught a virus that prevented my computer from connecting to the internet, when I ran Hijackthis, it said i was missing the file called flsmngr.dll. I reformatted my harddrive to see if that would fix the problem, it didn't. I still can't connect to the internet and now I have a worse problem. When I reformatted and installed Windows XP, the option to change the display settings was gone. I can't change the settings to anything above 640x480 and 16 bit color quality even though I know it can get better. What should I do??

You need to go to the computer's manufacture's web site and download the video drivers. OR if you know it's an nVidia or ATI you can just go to www.nvidia.com or www.ati.com and DL the latest drivers. Obviously you don't have internet to do this, go to a friends house, local college, or library and you should be able to get it done. Just be sure to bring a floppy or blank CD with you!
You might even have the drivers there without knowing it. Dell sometimes provides a driver CD with the computer. After that your Video will work perfect!

I assumed thats what I needed to do...where do I find out what drivers I will need (how do I find the name etc of my video card.) Any info on how to fix my internet connection would be welcomed as well. I think I need to update my network drivers as well.

you need to reload the drivers for your video card. That will correct that. If you connect to the internet through a modem or through a network card, then you may need to load the drivers for those items. That should take care of some of that. Then boot into safe mode(administrator) run your hijack this and any spyware stuff from there( make sure windows restore is turned off)

If it's a Dell like you say, just go to www.dell.com and put in the model number in the support/download section and you should find everything you need there. Including network card drivers.

Why not simply use the cd that came with the system? You will find ALL the necessary drivers there.
Lessons learnt the hard way are not easily forgotten.
