no thats wrong go buy the program. if there is an issue with a ton of spyware and all that and you have to reformat you can call microsoft the ywiwll issue a one time use key you will have to answer a couple of questions like about your xp cd is it SP1 SP2? those kinda things they might ask about the computer and where you bought it but then you will have yourself a free copy of windows.

hello hello hello, is there anybody in there...

If it's Dell, you might not need a reinstall CD.

Try this: When you start your computer, hold down the CTRL key and press F11 to access the system recovery wizard.

If it works, it will restore the system to the way it came from the factory.

If it's not a Dell, there might be a similar procedure for that manufacturer's model.

Don't press the Ctrl and F11 keys until AFTER post, and after you see the Press F2 for setup F12 for Boot Menu.

Don't hold down the keys, just press them for a moment.

Just a thought or two.
1. Look on the side of the case for the winxp sticker. You will need the numbers.

2. Contact the rental place and Dell and get an Dell OEM version of xp.

I don't believe Microsoft will send a Dell winxp cd to you and using a generic cd can leave you at Dell downloading all the right drivers for the system.

if you have a legitimate key and a CDROM that works with the key and the installation eventually passes the activation muster you're just fine.

Next time post the specifications for the problem machine, not the one that you are using to request help.

you can backup your existing drivers using this tool:

http://www.softpedia.com/get/System...

or just download the most recent drivers from dell's support page. their driver page is fairly easy to navigate, all you need is the model number.

If you go get the drivers...
Create a directory called drivers.
Then sub dirs. \Sound\video and so on.
Organize them!

Download each driver into the appropriate dir.

Then when you need them you at least know where and what they are.

The model number is right on the front of the computer.

You can enter the Service Tag number on Dell's website, get all the configuration information, and download the appropriate drivers.
