OS: 98SE (Upgrading to XP Pro
CPU/Ram: VIA Technologies (K7VM4 M
Comment:

I decided to upgrade to XP Pro from 98 SE. The installation works fine, XP Pro loads up perfectly.

Installed the drivers for the audio so i can hear sound perfectly.

USB 2 ports at first didn't work, had to download SP1 by reverting back to 98 SE. USB Ports worked fine after installing SP1 and using the Motherboard CD-ROM (K7MV4 Motherboard)

Under 98 i have an Alcatel Speedtouch 220 USB Modem. It works fine. It wudn't install under XP. After again reverting back to 98, i downloaded the updated drivers for the modem. The modem installed perfectly. The computer recognises it.

However, here is the real problem: Under "Network Connections" the BT Openworld Broadband icon and the Local Connection icon both have red crosses over them. I attempt to dial into my BT Openworld Broadband account using the Speedtouch Dialup program (included in the installation package) but i either

1) Get an error 0797, telling me the modem isn't there (which it is because the device manager says so)

or

2)I cannot get any response from any dialing program.

If anybody has aaany idea on how i can so much as connect to the internet under windows XP Pro, or get the red cross off the BT Openworld Broadband connection made by the installation of the modem, please, please let me know.

The network adapter may be a problem? Though the speedtouch ADSL PPP adapter is installed properly as well as the VIA ethernet controller (aparently Rhine II?)

Any help appreciated

Rob

Try deleting the connections and recreating them.

Thanx, i tried that but the problem still exists. When i try to dial into my broadband account, i get the error 0797 message, my modem "isn't there" yet its in device manager still!

Can you tell me why all the connections havea red cross through them? I'm guessing its because there is no possible way of connecting to them (hence why my modem "isn't there")

There is no problem between my modem and XP compatability, my friend has the same one. It's really annoyin me now. Having to revert back to 98 everytime it doesn't work. grr.

Thanx
