Name: the RAM
We have a Chinese computer here that we are trying to connect to our wireless network here in the US. Unfortunately, the network protocol in China is 802.11i, something that we do not have here.
So, if we are not able to connect, we are just going to get a US laptop.
Any thoughts?

I don't think it is the stated problem that is causing the issue of connecting. All 802.11i is is the wpa2 that we use here in America.
Now it could be that your network card is the problem as some older network cards just will not work in the wpa2 security protocol.
A new wireless networking adapter is a heck of a lot cheaper than a new laptop.

The network is not using wpa2, only wep. Does that make a difference?
The other thing is, is that the computer will not detect the other 6 networks in the neighborhood.
I will look into getting a network card.

That could be the NIC. Before buying a new NIC though, I would install a program like Net Stumbler and use it to see if those networks are available. If Net Stumbler sees them, then the NIC is working and it's likely a software issue (Net Stumbler obviously can't detect a wireless network if the wireless NIC itself isn't working properly right).

Just FYI - I would upgrade this to WPA. Our security guy cracked WEP encryption in under 30 minutes with his laptop.

Lol, I knew that one of you would tell me to upgrade security. It is not my network, my network, of course, runs WPA-PSK. I think that I am going to have to upgrade this persons' network security.
Thanks for the tips, I am going to try them out before I get a new laptop.
