70GB hard drive full...

June 8, 2011 at 16:57:47
Specs: Windows XP

I keep getting the "low disk space" message on my desktop. i know my 70gb hard drive isn't that big any more, but i can only find maybe 10 gb worth of files and programs, but it says i have less than 500mb. Yesterday i deleted a 10GB program ran defragmenter and now i'm back to less than 500mb again...virus? Norton hasn't picked up on anything

Make sure that you are also looking at hidden files and folders as well as system files when calculating space.

In folder options, click on the radio button for show hidden files and folders, also be sure to UN-CHECK the box for "Hide protected Operating System Files". This will allow ALL files to be visible when looking at various folders.

Alternatively, you could also download a free program called WinDirStat which will show you, in both tree and graphical forms, what space all of the files and folders are taking up on your drive. It can be found for free directly from the developer here: http://windirstat.info/. You could also get it from any of the major reputable free software download sites (eg. cnet/download.com, majorgeeks.com, etc)

Let me know if you have more questions.

Thanks i'll try that, i did use ccleaner and it deleted about 15 gigs of temp files, so i guess i'll find out in a day or so if i'm back out of space like the other day after deleting the 10 gigs.

Any comment on the suggestions given in #1, in particular are all files now unhidden?

Variations of 0.5G can happen when a computer is working. What is it like after you run Ccleaner then boot up to the desktop without running anything else.

after everything has been unhidden, and after running ccleaner and rebooting it shows i have cleared a significant amount of space, leaving 15-20 gigs free instead of the 500 mb, however i just got back from a 4 day vacation and i now only have 158mb of free space remaining again.

The last one of these I saw on here the poster eventually had to reformat and reinstall, once all the obvious things had been looked at.

Please do not post then vanish - let us know the outcome
