Still can't figure out how to get rid of this file, keep getting error message that the file is not found and to check the path. Here are the q&a's for a couple of posts I've had on here since last night. Does anyone have anymore suggestions? This file is taking up a lot of space! Thank you!

I have an mp3 file that I cannot delete. I get the message: Error deleting file or folder. Cannont delete NANCIG~1.MP3: Make sure you specify the correct path and file name" The mp3 is listed under My Documents - My Music - My Recordings - 1st round I have read some of the responses to similar questions, but not finding the info that will work for this problem. Could someone offer some advice please? Thank You!Report Offensive Message For Removal

Reply: Try going into crtl alt del and looking under processes for the file you want to get rid of, if you see it there end the process, if not try rebooting and delating the file right when your computer starts there for if it has a hidden copy of itself open somewhere hopefully you cant delate it before it loads. hope this works RickyReport Offensive Follow Up For Removal

Reply: Make sure you have no apps running that may have this file open. If not, boot to safe mode and you should be able to delete it. Otherwise you may have to boot using a windows 98 boot disk, etc. and delete it from DOS. Hope this helps.Report Offensive Follow Up For Removal

Reply: Thanks, but the alt cnt del didn't show it running. I tried rebooting in safe mode and deleting it, but that didn't work either. I right clicked to check on the properties, but the only options I have when I right click is Play / Import into Adobe Photoshop / Open / Copy to CD or Device / Open With / Send to If I reboot using the Windows XP disc, how do I delete it from DOS, and will I lose the other information on the computer?Report Offensive Follow Up For Removal

Reply: No. The song doesn't play nor does it open in anyway. It's as though it doesn't exist. I tried a blank file with the same name to see if I could delete it that way, but had no luck. Report Offensive Follow Up For Removal

I have that problem from time to time. This is what I do. It may not work for you but try it. Right click on the file and select properties. When the window opens look near the bottom. It will give 2 choices. One of them is to make it a read only file. After I make the change to read only it deletes with no further problems. Can't hurt to try it.

I may be crazy, but I'm not stupid...

Thanks for the advice. I tried that, but when I right click, I don't get the option to select properties. The only thing that comes up is: Play - Import into Adobe Photoshop Album - Open - Copy to CD or Device - Open With - Send to. When I've tried to even use any of these nothing happens. The strange thing is that this mp3 says it is 70 MB; however, the when I right click the folder it is actually in it says there are 0 bytes, and 0 files and 0 folders. Strangest thing I've ever seen!

Try deleting the `My Recordings' folder. You can always recreate it.

I tried to delete the "My Recordings" folder, I've even tried deleting "My Music" folder altogether too, but they won't delete either because of this file. I'm afraid the only way I'm going to get rid of it is by unistalling and reinstalling windows, and I'm trying to avoid that if at all possible. I've never seen anything quite like this!

Reinstalling is kinda drastic. It's not doing any harm and probably not taking up any space. I would consider just ignoring it.

However, I would suggest running Chkdsk, if you haven't yet.

I did a system check and nothing showed up; however, I can't do a check disc. It just stalls, and I keep my system really clean and do a check disc at least once a week, so the only reason I can figure that I can't do this is because of this crazy file!
Thanks for you input though, I'm trying just about everything!

I suspect that you might be right about that file causing chkdsk to hang.

When you tried the Chkdsk, did you select the following options?

Automatically fix file system errors
and
Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors

If not, I would try it again (maybe in safe mode this time) with those options selected. Be aware that the second one can take hours on a large hard drive.

I was able to do the scan disc, and I checked for bad sectors and to fix errors. Everything came back clean.

It is the clean disc drive that is not operating. I got mixed up earlier when I was telling you it was the check disc.

I did a disc defragmentor and tried deleting the file after that completed, but it still wouldn't go away.

I've also tried system restore.

I'm confused!
WinXP doesn't have scandisk, it has ChkDsk
I have no idea what `Clean disk' is

Disc Cleanup - Under accessories.

I tried the move on boot, but it wouldn't let me select the file, because it won't show up under anything.

The scan I did was the one you use to check for errors, the same one you suggested.

It's honestly, acting like a ghost file. I can't figure it out. Nothing can open it or read it as if it isn't there, but it is there and staying!

Try to rename another mp3 file to the same name as your problem file then try to delete it.

Boot the machine with a Win98 boot floppy and delete it from DOS.

If it was formatted with NTFS they have boot floppies for that too.

I see someone already mentioned that but it failed. File name too long could be a syntax error. Try it with a wildcard or put it in it's own directory and then try
del *.*
to wipe out the whole directory.
