Comment:

Just installed a brand new LaCie 500GB Big Disk external Firewire400 disk. Formatted it NTFS, defaulted to largest partition size, did not enable file/folder compression. It works fine, but when I right click it and hit "properties" it shows as only half empty and half used. Moved a couple of large files over & deleted 'em....no change. Tried to extend the partition from the command line, but it says "no can do". In the Computer Management utility, it shows as a 467.52GB device (looks good to me), but when you dive deeper, still says it's half used.

Is this a limitation in the properties return? I.E. is it really all there and the properties info cannot accept that size of a partition? Or have I somehow hammered this thing? Any ideas/observations would be most appreciated!

TIA

JD

Make sure you have Show hidden files and folders enabled and check the contents of the drive again. I know that Norton Utilities will "protect" files which will make a drive have less space than it would appear. If you have Norton Utilities, right-click your recycle bin and select Empty Norton Protected files.

Nope, no Norton, I'm afraid, and yes, show hidden is enabled. BTW, I'm using SP1, NOT SP2, fyi. Still very confused....unhappy....DISAPPOINTED! :(

Check the Disk manufacturer's website for any issues with it.

I may be way off on this But you might check the BIOS and see if it has the LBA option
