i know 2 is possible, ive never tried 5 hehe. you need to get a video card for each screen ... so you will need 5 expansion slots for your video cards alone!! its probably a good idea toi get the same video cards for all your monitors so you dont get problems with drivers

Two monitors showing differnt things is the limit. However, if you want five monitors all showing the same thing, thats no problem with the right hardware. You just need a video control box with one input and five outputs.

Actually you can have 5 monitors showing different things. I don't knwo the termanoligy, but there are boxes that will take one vga input from your computer, split it in half and send it to 2 vga outputs. Of course you may lose some quility of the picure because it is, in effect, being magnified by 2.

actually, i remember seeing a review for a video card that has 3 monitor ports (good for gaming).

Haven't heard anything about having 5 monitors though. Not even sure if you can install 5 video cards...there ought to be some sort of hardware/irq conflict...

I have read that the maximum number of monitors you can attach at one time is nine. That was back in the Win98 days so I'm pretty sure that Xp can at least do as many if not more.

You don't need splitters or anything like that. You just need to have a videocard for each monitor you want hooked up. If you want five monitors hooked up it'd probably be best if you bought a couple dual head cards, just to save on pci slots.

The most I personally have had hooked up was four, three monitors and one tv. I was using three seperate videocards. Two Geforce cards and my onboard video. It was pretty awesome but kinda stimulus overload LOL.

Now that I've thought about it I remember seeing a pic of a guy that had eleven monitors hooked up. So I'm not too sure the actual limit is but five is no problem.

I recommend Geforce cards for multiple monitor setups, just out of personal experience.

Hope this helps,
Sandman

Some systems use a single card with mulitple heads (monitor outputs) while others are stackable (use multiple cards). Some have both PCI and AGP version while others have only PCI or AGP versions. Some cards are good for 2D and 3D applications. Other are good for 2D only making them poor choices for gaming.

Examples of multiple head cards are:
Nvidia GeForce 4 ti4600 (2 heads) $230 AGP
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro (2 heads) $300 AGP
Colorgraphic Xentera GT (2, 4 or 8 heads) $753 8-head PCI
Matrox Perhelia - 128 (3 heads) $374 AGP

Examples of stackable cards are:
Colorgraphic Predator ProMedia (2 or 4 heads) (stackable up to 6 cards) $425 4-head PCI

What about controlling them?...do you need any extra software to switch between them? Or do I need to keep switching to the card and making changes?

Windows is capable of controlling the monitors. Once you add extra videocards you will be able to enable/disable the monitors and set their positioning. You can drag & drop the monitors into the proper configuration. Geforce drivers also add extra options.

I've posted a screenshot to show the difference in the display settings. You can see it here
