I have two 256 DIMM chips installed on a ASRock motherboard. However Windows is showing that I only have 480mb of RAM.

Is this normal?

Yes if you have the board with integrated graphics sharing your ram. If you have a seperate graphics card, disable the onboard graphics in bios.

2 x 256 = 512mb

diff = 32mb (strangely enough)
