Hi, i'm trying to fix a neighbour's laptop who's running xp home, 2.8 gHz and 128mb SDRAM. When they click on their logon icon, it shows that 4 .tmp files are "not a valid windows image. Please check these against your installation diskette". The message box reads "ndis.exe - bad image" at the top. The four files with problems are: nta1.tmp, nla3.tmp, gpa4.tmp and hxa5.tmp. Any help on this would be appreciated as we dont know what the problem is!
Thanks for your time!

A Google search for ndis.exe produces a lot of results, but the others don't. Don't know if this will help or not.

Is the problem they're having that they can't log in, or what? It's not in my c:\windows\system 32. What if you just deleted them all (after copying them somewhere) and see what happens?

Yes you can copy these files into a new folder and then try deleting these files.
Since these are .tmp files, deleting them shouldn't make any difference.

I went through my registry and deleted all the ndis.exe keys. I then rebooted the pc in safe mode and deleted the ndis.exe file and emptied the recycle bin. Then I rebooted again and the issue was gone. Thanks a bunch!

My mom had this problem as well, "ndis.exe - Bad Image" message at boot up. Without me working directly on her laptop (a fairly new Toshiba running XP Home) she ran a Norton AntiVirus scan, and changed the option from "Deny access to the infected file" to Automatically repair the infected file (recommended)". This setting is found under Options/System/Auto-Protect/How to respond when a virus is found.
The problem went away. So, I'm not sure what fixed it or even what caused it, but her's was a simple fix.
