I reinstalled windows today and am having problems with my 3rd hard drive. I have two hard drives and two cdroms hooked directly to my motherboard. I have a 180gb hd that's hooked to a maxtor ata/100 pci card. My computer has the drivers for the pci card installed, but xp doesn't recognize the drive. I don't want to format the drive because it has data on it that i don't want to lose. Is there some way of making xp recognize my drive again? It was working fine until i reinstalled windows.

Hi,

In order to make xp to recognize this large hard drive you need to upgrade to service pack1, as xp without service pack 1 cannot recognize size greater than 130-140 GB.

For update, you can visit
www.windowsupdate.microsoft.com

If you have a dial up connection, its better to get a servicepack 1 cd, which you can get in $10.

All the best

If I hook up the drive directly to the motherboard, it gets recognized correctly. Only when I hook it up through the ATA card am I unable to see the data on the drive or even have the full size of the drive recognized.

Sounds like a bad ide card or there is a i/o or irq conflict.

XP recognizes the controller card. If I use partition magic, I can see that the computer knows that there is a hd attached to the computer, but it is only being recognized as 132gb when it shoudl be 180gb. I have sp1 installed. The controller card appears to be working. Does anyone know why I can't get a drive letter assigned or why the size of the drive is off?
