I just purchased a new hd to replace my old 30gig one. Now I was wondering, rather than use the 30gig drive as backup, could i turn it into some sort of 30gig virtual ram or somthing of the sort?

I would hate to throw away perfectly good parts, and I would love to make my computer bette for free.

A hard drive can never be as fast as random access memory. But if you're a gamer, you could gain a bit more speed by having the page file (swap file) write itself to a second drive.

Some gamers, depending on the game and their PC's configuration, disable the page file when playing. But be careful: disabling the page file can cause your box to crash.

PS If you've got a gig and a half of RAM as you indicate, you might be able to disable the paging file without diverting it to a second drive, with no problems. But again, this is only of real help to gamers.
