Comment:

This problem is not with my computer but my little cousin's computer. I'm trying to help him with it (not doing very good though). He has XP Pro, cpu P4 1.5, 256 SDRAM. The problems are:

1) Computer is slow to boot up.
2) The computer is slow overall in any task.
3) The computer restarts itself out of the blue.

Oh and another side note, scandisk crashes/freezes at stage 4 on 21%. So I can't run a complete scandisk. A defrag was done however. Please help.

Dear friend,
Your cousin's system seems to be infected with virus so go for a complete
scan with an updated and GOOD antivirus software to the likes of NORTON ANTIVIRUS,
Mc AFEE etc;please tell me if the system has
SDRAM or RDRAM because if you are using SDRAM with a P4 processor then you are almost bottlenecking your processor other reasons are too many startup programs, improper BIOS settings,PIO modes of transfer etc, also make sure you are not
having voltage fluctuations because they often lead to constant restarts, disable automaticaly restart option in the advanced
section of the SYSTEM option in control panel

His computer is SDRAM. I had formatted the computer after it had ME and was a complete mess (even had a virus). After a clean install of XP, I thought everything was fine but somewhere along the line this happened. I tried running Norton Anti-Virus. It takes forever and then sits forever at 99%- it never completed.
