OS: Win2K
CPU/Ram: 2.8 Ghz/ 1 gig
Product: Custom Built
Comment:

Strange: System with Win2k Pro. Fresh bought from Microsoft, WinXP Pro.

Comes up and says you can't upgrade from 2k Pro to XP Pro.

This is a full version of XP Pro. Do you need to have the XP upgrade instead?

Today seems like a good day to chew through the restraints.

go into bios and make sure you have it set to boot from CDRom, that should work for you.

Hopefully my advice will help you...Please post back with your results....thanks

are you sure your OS is not 2k Pro SERVER (or Advanced Server) instead of just the 2k Pro client? That might be why, but I've never heard of an issue upgrading XP over the top of 2K (client).

At any rate XPUser4Real's post should work, boot to CD and install the OS fresh, it's cleaner than upgrading. Make sure you have your data backed up and reformat the drive before the install.

Also in answer to your other question, no you shouldn't need the "upgrade" cd... the one you have should be fine.

Yes, very strange.

The current os is Win2k Pro. Not Server or anything like that.

I'd rather not do the fresh install, but I was curious about the fact it wouldn't install over Win2k from within Windows itself.

Thanks,

Larry

Was your 2K a fresh install or over another OS, also is it NTFS format? That is bizarre.. might want to google some and see if there are any known issues with XP going over 2k.

Well do you have the "store bought" so called RETAIL version (boxed),

or do you have the so called "OEM"

"for distribution with a new PC only"

I wanted to install over the W2k to avoid all the reinstalling I'd have to do.

I know a clean install is best, but I wanted to just load XP on top of what's there.

And yes, the XP and the Win2k were bought as full packages, not OEM's.

NTFS on the partition.

This is not a great big deal, but you used to be able to install over the os and this one won't.

Just seemed a little odd is all.

Definitely not something to get worked up about.

G'day Seawatch, I did this very same upgrade not one week ago without a problem, even in Fat32. It should work for you too.

Doing as fresh install. It just wouldn't go for some reason.

Thanks for the tips.
