I have an old wme computer that using the same phone line, a 56k dial-up and same isp software is much faster than my new computer on the net. I called their tech support and was given two courses of action, 1- to delete cookies and temp files, 2- using msconfig, in the service area to uncheck firewall and virus program. It is a little faster on the net, but the old computer is still much faster. Is there any other adjustments I can make on this computer to speed-up loading a webpage which takes from 2 to 5 minutes to appear on my monitor.
The second adjustment I would like to make is the xp logo. It stays on the screen for 15 to 20 seconds, which is really a waste of time. I would like to see it load to the welcome screen rather then starting with the xp.
Thanking you in advance for any help you can give me,
frank

Does anything else run slow on your xp comp? sounds as thugh you have an overloaded os, that may needs reinstallation if many things are slow.

The modem drivers that you used for the Windows ME unit will not work properly with the XP unit.
Go to the modems manufacturers’ website and get the proper XP drivers. This may speed the connection up. Sometimes the modem need their BIOS flashed to work with the latest software; so check that out too.
The setting for the length of time the logo stays on is in the “system” folder under “startup and recovery”

Thank you for your help, Atomicboy and FJ, all other functions are normal in the 6 month old dell, only the internet is so slow. FJ my old computer has the wme, not the new one. The machine also has sdram, while the dell has ddr. Both have 512k memory, this new machine has about 1/2 of the program my old one has, I defrag it so the computer can work as fast as possible, yet, I can brew coffee waiting for it to download a webpage. The tips I got from tech support helped a little, but my old slower machine works much faster than a much faster computer with faster memory chips. I am at a loss to figure while this computer is so slow as compared to a much slower (cpu&memory) one.
Thank you FJ for the logo tip, I want to zap it so it will load to the welcome screen. As you can figure I am using my old machine to reply to use,
thanks again guys, hopefully you might have other suggestions that can help me get this computer up to speed,
frank
