This can be a crap shoot.

First, what about your system, is it a Dell as you show in the header? Does it have a built-in video adaptor? (on the motherboard)

You should check the Microsoft "hardware compatability list" as well as any documentation you can find for what you are thinking of buying.

There are several gotcha's

One is that sometimes onboard video adaptors just plain "don't like" other adaptors. Sometimes these onboard adaptors can be disabled, and sometimes not--in the bios. You can also adapt them in the hardware profile, but you have to be careful--you can end up with NO video

Many newer video cards come with two outputs

If you get a pair that like each other, setup is usually pretty simple. You install the adaptor, then bring up vido properties--which varies depending on whether you are administrator, or for what system.

After you get properties for the display "up" there should be a "settings" tab, and there should be a box showing the two displays. click on which one you want as "primary" and make sure the appropriate box is checked. Then click the "2" monitor, and check the box "extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor.

I've got three computers set up this way. All my stuff is a little behind the times, and I've picked up some used 17" CRT monitors used/ thrift stores. While they are bulky, using a pair of 17" monitors is one HECK of a lot cheaper than springing for great big LCD displays.

Hope you dont mind my asking..why do you need two monitors? If its to secretly watch what your kids are doing, I can understand that. But beyond that I don't see any advantage...

Some apps aren't multi-monitor friendly, however (especially certain screen savers). With this add-on, you'll instantly be able to: maximize the current window to all monitors, enable/disable your additional monitor(s), and blacken the other screen(s) when your screen saver runs.

Having two monitors in my editing bay had made production soooo much sweeter. Time lines are easier to read, Preview monitor is 4x the size it would be on a single, file browser is huge, etc.

I do alot of graphic design & photo editing as well, and The more real estate the better! I usually have the image I'm working on full screen to the left, and all my open files, tool bars, comps, mp3 player, etc. open on the right.

It rules. I run 2 19" viewsonics off a Nvidia 6600GT.

I have about 700$ into this setup, which is about the entry level price for one professional quality 19" LCD. X that by two. Those 279$ ones just don't cut it for real color work.

In reality, I'd go 20" or better on the LCD X 2, so we're talking big savings.

Not a waste by any measure XPUser. What do you use XP for exactly anyway??? Seemed like an awfully ignorant blanket statement.

Good day.

These two statements make no sense to me. It sounds like you're saying you built it yourself, but you don't know if it has onboard video?

Please let us know if you found someone's advice to be helpful.

Hi Mirna,

Look on the back of your motherboard for a socket that matches the plug on your monitor if there is one you have an onboard video card.

You can usually enable or disable it in your BIOS.

Bob

If you wake up to see the day - it can't be that bad.
