I would use some page file no matter how much RAM I had.
You might not need it, but it can't hurt.

And it doesn't hurt to use it. It just takes up a little hard drive space and is a safety valve, just in case.

But with 2 GB RAM you can make the Windows system files NOT use the swap file, thus speeding up your system:

it involves a registry tweak:

regedit

HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\current control set\ control\session manager\ memory management

(DWORD) DisablePagingExecutive=1

This key should be there. Value will be set to 0

Back up your registry first!

I'm going to look into that registry tweak. I have 1.5gb of ram and I never go below 700 free and I'm always using vram.

And I think its best to stay away from Vram if you can, just that much less work on the hard drive.

I'm going with the majority on this one.

It’s better to have a pagefile and not need it than need one and not have it. Go in there, set it on system managed size and happily go about your computing.

Retroguy, that fix sounds pretty good, if it only affects system files. Are you sure that's the case?

You don't need a reg hack. You can set paging to NONE in the GUI. That hack only deals with the kernel mode drivers/code. Set paging to none and the kernel doesn't have anywhere to page to.

Personally I like to move beyond the "better safe than sorry" approach to eliminating the pagefile. Set it to none and see what issues you run into if any. If none leave it as none.

The biggest issue is not having a pagefile too large which wastes disk space and can causing system slowness due to disk io contention.

Lest I forget, some heavy applications like Adobe Photoshop will not coorperate or run smoothly with the 'no pagefile' option enabled and invariably you may be forced to have one.

IMO, HDD's are so cheap these day that drive space conservation shouldn't be an issue for anyone and until I see some comparable data that shows how much faster a system acts without & with a pagefile in place, I will leave some pagefile enabled.

Thanks for that link Wanderer. It might be good for people who are really concerned with higher performance.

Good points Sabertooth!

go with the no page file option
i have been doing it for 5 years now and have always enjoyed good speed and performance
2gb of ram = 3gb of wasted harddrive on systm managed page file
youll never know if you dont give it a go

I've eliminated the Page file on all my systems (all 512mb RAM or better) to no obvious detriment.

One point which is well known but worth reiterating:

Putting the Page file on a different HD will always be faster than having it on C:\
