In device manager and under display adapters, it shows I have two.

On only one of them I tried dissabling first then uninstalling second. Then restart. Then I think I did the dumbest thing. I dissabled them both and now my screen is just black after the knightriderWindows logo dissapears.

Any suggestions on a fix?

Never ever tweak with something you are not sure about. Boot to Safe Mode and apply last known good configuration.

The philosophy of tweaking with something you are not sure about to see what happens, in one sense is basically how hacking was formed and one of it's earliest definitions.

Not that I think I should explain my mistake to anyone, but the dissabling of both adapters was merely a mistake on my behalf. Though, thanks for your prompt reply, I would however have be grateful if someone would explain how/why a computer would display two display adapters. That to me is more of the real true mystery.

Having two display adapters listed in the device manager is not so much an unexplainable phenomenon.

What you see in the device manager is simply a software based enumeration of the hardware detected or installed, if you have a board that has both integrated and discreet video there is a possibility of that happening and you needing to disable one of them.

Another thing if you install a bogus driver on top of what you have, it'll also be reflected in the device manager, you need to go into safe and remove the wrong listing or preferably both and let window redect the VGA adapter on reboot before you load the correct driver for it.

Hi Override, XpUser, hello everyone,

It's not really so uncommon now a day to show two video adapters listed in the device manager. Card has a stardard VGA adapter and a DV-I connector is one possible reason.

To know why there was actually two on your specific computer you would need to supply
more information.

What video adapter do you have installed?

How were they listed in the device manager?

Where they listed as the same adapter, yet on called Primary and the other Secondary?

Hello mesich,

My card does have both VGA and DVI connector and I don't have two hardware listings in the device manager for display adapters, should I be calling Mister Gates now for a refund or wait....:-)

Hi Sabertooth,

Don't call Mister Gates just yet, he might be down in the shipping department helping to get our free USB sticks in the mail. :-)

I have seen it several times here lately, always with a newer ATI Radeon card. They are listed in the Device Manager as Primary and Secondary.

OVERRIDE,

Can't imagine why the laptop would show two other than for those reasons mentioned by Sabertooth in Response #3.

Hello mesich, SaberTooth and others...

So I remember I once read a long time ago about bulky monitors with the degaus thing and so I figured that's what was wrong with my notebook so I disconnected the AC cord/ power cord and took out the battery.

I then pressed the power button for about 5 minutes (you know to remove any static electricity)

And connected everything back...ac cord and battery. What do you know? BOOM! it works fine :) thanks guys for are your help though

Hello everyone,

I knew I still had one here with the 2 adapters showing up in the Device Manager.

Here's a screenshot.

Hi OVERRIDE,

"I then pressed the power button for about 5 minutes (you know to remove any static electricity)".

Actually, no I don't.

I am also not sure what your problem was other than curiosity of having 2 video adapters within the Device Manager.

hey mesich,
in your screenshot one of those says secondary. Well mine do not say secondary or primary they are both one and exactly the same.

In reality my original issue was that my display or screen looked greyish as if the notebook was below 32bit. So I checked and Display Properties + setting showed I was indeed in 32bit. So I check device manager and display adapters and that's when I say identical adapters.

I guess you might not be aware of the method that I used to make everything back to normal but that's what I did and it worked.

Hi OVERRIDE,

Glad to hear everything is working.

I understand the steps you went through however , it does not degauss the screen.

An LCD does not ever require degaussing as there is no CRT in them which creates the electromagnetic buildup.

mesich, my computing.net colleague, it would be absurd to even think of degaussing an lcd screen. it's just not true.

my comment about other bulky screens and degaussing was a mere example of what more or less the direction I was heading. If you and anyone else in the future with this problem understood/understands me by my example then that's what I was trying to do.

the point is that I had this problem and I figured it out and so I posted the answer for future reference. I do of course appreciate you, sabertooth and xpuser's input on this matter. Thank you the problem has been solved.
