Can't get on internet.Tech support has
identified 169 ip address.Have tried
release/renew,rbt modem,etc,no help.
1)Suggestions?
2) Why is a 169 address such a kiss of
death?
Thx Doug

More information required. What hardware are you using? Is this address supplied by you ISP? If so they should sort it. Or is it a private address. If so it might be the problem as 169 is not one of the designated private address numbers.

Doug,
If your connection fails, windows automatically searches for an IP, resulting in the 169 address
To disable automatic address configuration do the following:
Open Registry Editor.
In Registry Editor, navigate to the following registry key:
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip
\Parameters\Interfaces\adapter_nameCreate the following entry:
IPAutoconfigurationEnabled: REG_DWORD
Assign a value of 0 to disable Automatic Private IP Addressing (APIPA) support for the selected network adapter.
Close Registry Editor.
Note: You must be logged on as an administrator
