I tried installing Citrix Program Neighbourhood and when I activated the installshield wizard and it started extracting files the following error popped up:
16 bit windows subsystem
c:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt
The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows'; return true;" onmouseout="window.status=''; return true;">Microsoft Windows Applications. Choose Close to terminate the application.Options to choose are close and ignore and if you click either nothing happens.
Could anyone help me with this one.
Thanks
yeah...
i got the same error message... a little bit ago i had my computer cleaned out by best buy and they took The Sims off of my computer and all the expansion packs... i was really bored earlier today and i had to reinstall it... it gave me the same error message when i hit install:
[C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.]
[CLOSE IGNORE]
i read a post on here before that was similar and i did what it said... it was under AUTOEXEC.NT problem or something...
*if you search in Google and type "AUTOEXEC.NT DOWNLOAD" it should come up and be this same site...and i did what the 1st guy said to do*
...i got the read-only file but it still doesn't work...so if someone could help both of us it'd be really good. CMS if you wanna try what i did go ^ahead^ and hopefully it works for you...but otherwise i'm still without help? It'd be really nice if someone could give me a different thing to do or tell me what i did wrong...
this is what i did...
i went to.... www.oldmp.com/forms/download/xpservicepack2.htm
and did what it said to do about downloading the read-only autoexec.nt file and extracting it into WINNT or WINDOWS...i did it into WINNT... and i looked and it was in there...
then i tried to install the sims again and it gave me the same error message again...so im just wondering if i did something wrong or im just lucky that it doesn't work for me?
i have windows xp

You also seem to have a keyword hijacker which has embedded a search link in your post (serverlogic3)
Why don't they make computers that will do what we think we want them to do?
Checkout this MS page: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb%3Ben-us%3B324767&Product=winxp
Error message when you install or start an MS-DOS or 16-bit Windows-based program http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;324767
Go to the XP_Fix.EXEFIX site and download XP_FIX.EXE and follow directions
I used the XP_FIX.EXE that DJD suggested above and I was able to install the Citrix program. However I did notice that as soon as I rebooted my computer that I lost the autoexec.nt file in the c:\windows\system32 folder again. I guess if I run into the error again when installing a program I could just run the fix again.
CMS, The below info is from the XP_FIX.EXE download site. ""This installaton program will reinstall the missing or corrupt Windows XP system files command.com, autoexec.nt and config.nt. The absence or corruption of one or more of these files causes a "16 Bit Subsystem" error.
We recommend that you download this file and save it to your desktop or to another location where you can find it. Double click on the file to run it once it's downloaded. If problem reoccurs in the future, simply re-run this program".
So you could just run it anytime the problem occurs. There seems to be a rash of people having the same problem and nobody seems to have a definitive cause for the problem. Some say it has to do with possible spyware and some say it has to do with AVG Antivirus according to other forums I frequent. Here's the link again in case you need it.

Do you have a fix for windows 2000 Professional? I don't have any of the startup cds, and the fix on the Microsoft help page is dependent on these cds.
Thanks
E-Supa, I've seen that some Windows 2000 users also used the XP_Fix.EXE fix and it worked but I'm not guaranteeing anything. Tufenuf
I have just run this XP_Fix.EXE patch, and it has also cured the problem. For me though, the problem arose when installing an HP PSC 1402 All-In-One Printer. It also caused the MSXML to become corrupt, which stopped MSN Messenger v7.5 and BitComet v0.60 from working. Using a system restore point solved the issue with the MSXML and the other software problems, but when trying to use the scanner on the all-in-one printer, the 16 bit subsystem error still came up.
The printer has gone back to the store, and been replaced with the Lexmark equivalent. The patch has been run, and works. My thanks to this forum and its members for your assistance.

P.S I noticed someone had mentioned the possiblility of this being the fault of AVG. This system also currently has AVG on it, but i will be replacing it with McAfee All-In-One 2005 shortly just in case.
