I got a 320GB hard drive back in January but haven't been able to use it since Windows XP only recognises 128GB. I've read all about this on the internet, and tried a bunch of things, but it doesn't seem anything will work on my 2001 computer. And really, I want a new computer. Where online can I buy only the computer and case, no hard drive keyboard monitor et cetera. I'm guessing it'll be cheap? I just want it to be very new and up to date.

That HDD might work with your computer if you put in a PCI/IDE adapter card.

Look for barebones computers. Newegg, ZipZoomFly, TigerDirect, etc. Barebones computers do vary in what they contain so you will most likely need to still buy a few additional parts to make it complete.

Depending on what parts you currently have and if they are proprietary you may be able to reuse your case and optical drives. At a bare minimum you will need:

Case
Power Supply
Mother Board
CPU
Memory
Video Card (or on-board video)
Hard Drive (you have)
Optical Drive

Also, since this will be a new system, unless you have a retail version of Windows XP, you will need to get a copy of that.

I recently built a computer using this:

http://shop2.outpost.com/product/4532287

The MOBO has onboard display but also supports either AGP or PCIe display. It takes either DDR or DDR2 RAM. I already had a case with a 350 watt PSU that I paid $54 for and a 120GB HDD that I got at Staples for $40. I got 1GB RAM for $90 and a 16X DVD burner for $40. I paid $179 for the CPU/MOBO when I bought it in December so my computer cost about $400.

Do you have SP 1 or SP 2 installed ? 128G was also a Windows XP limiting factor if you did not have any Server Packs installed.

I also have a 300GB SATA drive on XP SP2 with no problems. Your issue is probably your BIOS being old and not recognizing the entire drive

Well usually service pack 1 doesn't support that big of a harddrive. If it westerndigital, than you can do it two ways, try the bootup disc that came with it, or just download the bootdisk off the website and run the wizard. If you have service pack 2 installed on windows xp you should be able to format the whole thing. And it will recognize the whole harddrive and not be limited to 128 gb.

Well, I just downloaded SP2 and it still says 128GB when I look under Disk Defragmenter. So that's not the problem then, right? I am pretty sure it's my BIOS but I can't update that. It's PhoenixBIOS or something. Hm.

A PCI/IDE adapter card might work.

Do computers from 2001 have flash BIOS? I don't think mine does. I couldn't even find an update for it!

What is this PCI/IDE adapter card stuff?

A PCI/IDE adapter card sits in a PCI slot and usually has 2 IDE busses. It has its own BIOS that will allow it to see larger drives and run at ATA 133 or 150.

Are you using an 80 wire cable?
