I have 2 machines both running Win XP Pro and connected with a crossover cable. I am having problems with my nic cards. One computer has the integrated 3com 3c920 ethernet controller and I have an older Windbond W89C940 10mbps on the other computer. The network works fine on 10mbps but when I try to install a faster nic "3com 3C905B-TX" the network will not work. The packets are sent from both computers but neither receive. The status of the nics states it is connected at 100mbps on both computers. I have tried moving the nic to another pci slot and get the same thing. I even tried installing another nic "same brand and type", and still connected but no transfer between the 2 computers. Does anyone have a suggestion? Thanks in advance...
try forcing both cards to 100 Full Duplex in the device manager > your netcard > advanced...link speed or network media or something similar...this depends on your driver for each netcard to what the name is, do this on both machines ofcourse and let us know if it helps?
hmm. you do have your protocols configured to talk to each other dontcha ?? If the nics are installed fine then it might be down to that if they wont talk !!

I have a gut feeling that you're using an older network cable . . . make sure you're using cat5 if you want 100mbps transfers.

Ok guys first thanks for the quick responses. I forced both machines cards to full duplex 100mbps. The crossover cable is cat5. Still no luck. Both machines are sending data but not receiving data. I am using internet connection sharing for the machine that has the non-integrated nic and the settings for tcp/ip are 192.168.0.1 and subnet 255.255.255.0. All other settings are set to default. The other machine is set to abtain an IP automatically. Hope this helps a little.. Thanks
