I have been trying to fix this problem since I got my laptop two years ago. After hours and hours... and hours with Dell's award winning service (and the paying option too) and Dell and searching forums, the problem has yet to be fixed.
My laptop will reach 100% cpu usage when I run large applications like games and also when I watch large steaming shows (ie abc.com). It reaches 100 cpu usage after about five minutes of use, and then after another minute or so it will reduce back to a normal cpu usage. and then it will do it again and repeat itself. With a nifty little program called processxp I was able to see that these peaks in usage happend in time intervals, so that its not a random occurence but time specific. So I think its a virus and not my graphics card. But of course after running a whole bunch of registry cleaners, spyware cleaners, computer performance improvers (using uniblue stuff right now) and an anti virus program (panda). Nothing works. I have done pretty much everything on forums that could fix this, limit start ups, hotfixes, update drivers, update bios, taking out the battery, etc.
Nothing seems to work. I did reinstall windows too, but recently it has come back, maybe I got it again.
If anyone knows whats going and how I can fix this you will be my hero.
My computer is speced really well for a laptop: 2gb ram, intel dual processors, Nvidia Quadro NVS 120M.

Does the same thing (high cpu usage) occurs even when you are doing something else like surfing the net and running office applications?
i_Xp/VistaUser

Have you looked in Task manager to see exactly which process(s) are using all this CPU time. It should give you a clue to what is causing it.

Ya I forgot about putting that, that would help. And no not when I surf the net and do other things, except of course when I close a program druing a peak time and then the rest of the things I try to do will be slowed until it stops.
Also thanks to processxp, I was able to find exactly what was happening. I noticed that system would take the rest of the idle process. System contains many things, so I narrowed it to services.exe. This is the legit services.exe C:\\Windows\system32\services.exe
What happens is that a whole bunch of programs are activated at the same time, Pretty much all of them ones that are not being used, then are deactivated, then activated and so forth, each one not using up alot but it adds up so that services.exe will eventually have about 20%-30% usage.

Well type in services.msc and disable the ones that you dont need for startup. Also if you have a question about which one to disable google it and see if it is needed. Also you might want to do a spyware scan using ad-aware to see if it brings up anything.

I had this problem twice, I eventually gave up and reformatted my drive. The problem was I shared my computer with my roommate and he was just downloading everything, installing everthing, running everything. I had up to date virus scan, router, etc. I should of setup a guest account for him instead.

Download HijackThis and post a log for us. I know it's meant as anti-spyware, but you might as well have something heavy installed.
Also notice that most laptops go up for 100% because they are meant for effect and not strength. I know that your model is good at strong grafics but video games isn't always the same as heavy office-used grafics. The latitudes is office computers. Is it games like UT3 were talking about or is it WOW?. Can't figure out what's going on on abc.com it doesn't seam like crashing anything. Try a different codec and lets check up your system a little bit.--------------------

No this happens with games like Ragnarok Online too, old games that are 3d.Also it seems like watching videos does it too, like on you tube.
(Note the Log file is when I'm not running any games, so I'm not sure if it will make a difference or not)

What's these?I can see that there's a lot af panda securety and Toshiba bluetooth stuff. Are you sure you actually need all those things running? You could shut it down when you doesn't use it, that goes well with the iTunes helper and the iPod services. I know that you're a superuser, which includes a lot of internet activity, but you could use another machine as a download/web computer. Then you only need a firewall on the laptop because the download machine have scanned all other files through. Then never enter untrustable sites with the laptop. :)

aim6 is aol instant messaging, the uniblue stuff are programs i added recently to help fix my problem, same with panda.

Damn, i have the same problem on my Dell Latitude D820. I tried reinstall Window, reseting BIOS, and nothing happpen :(

I don't think any programs will help you speed up your pc. They'll always just add some usage.
