"0x0000007B" error

Acer aspire one Zg5

Specs: Windows XP
Ok..... so I download an update for AVG Anti-virus and my little Acer got all discombobblated. Before long it got stuck in a re-boot loop. I was able to get it to pause and I saw "*** STOP: 0x0000007B..." under "Technical Information". I'm guessing a registry issue. I am able to access the hidden recovery partition using ALT+F10, but I have like hundreds of family pics on the hard drive. I was wondering if there might be a way to save my little Acer without restoring to factory settings and losing all the pics.
Thank you for any advice anyone may have.
Take care and God bless

The classic BSOD, blue screen of death. Reboot, hit F8, and try "Last Known Configuration. This will only work if you have not logged in since the error happened. Other wise try safe mode, and uninstall the updates or roll back the system restore to a previous date. Either way your data should be intact on the drive. In a worst case scenario, you could pull the drive and copy the pictures off it. So don't worry.

Thanks you HM. I have tried the "Last Known" and "Safe Mode" with no success. I was able to change the boot order and connected an external DVD ROM to it. That would work if I had an Acer boot disk, but, I don't; and I can't make one because my Acer won't boot.... :-)
Pulling the HDD and copying the pics sounds like a "last ditch effort", but its almost all thats left. I have no clue what that entails.
