Hi!! I recently purchased a LiteOn Dvd Burner (internal drive) and would like to know how to burn a DVD-R disc where others can read it on their pcs?I made 2 disc today of programs and pics I have been saving on my hardrive and after the disc was burned,I was able to view what was on it from the pc I burned them from, but I am not able to read the disc on any other computers.I have wasted 2 dvdr's already and really don't want to waste a 3rd.Can someone help please?I am using the new Nero Ultra Edition. Thanks very much..

Hi Leslie,
Is your new burner shown here http://www.directron.com/ldw811s1.html
If it is, we'll know its spec
hmmmmm....

I'm sorry the model number is the
LiteOn True 8x (8x8) DVD Burner SOHW-812s.I guess this is their latest burner.

The link in my previous post is a review. This one is the spec http://www.liteonamericas.com/us/DVDRW_812S.htm

Yes I believe that's the one.The thing is when I burn a cdr I can view the contents on other computers but if I burn a dvd-r I can only view it on the computer I burned the disc from.
Is there something better to burn dvd-r's then Nero?

I was under the impression that DVD+R was the appropriate media and format for data disks and that DVD-R was preferred for movie type files. I could be mistaken about that though.

Alright. If you want us to really be of help to you, don't jump. Let's go slow.
First off, there's some mitakes on your description. This burner is NOT DVD-R burner. It is a DVD±RW/CD±RW Burner, which means its capable of recording on DVD+R, DVD-R, and CD-R media.
Now look at the burner specs:
DVD Family
Write : DVD+R 8X(10800KB/sec) by Z-CLV
DVD-R 8X(10800KB/sec) by Z-CLV
ReWrite : DVD+RW 4X(5400KB/sec) by CLV
DVD-RW 4X(5400KB/sec) by CLV
Read : 12X(16200KB/sec) maxmium by CAV
Access Time : 160msCD Family
Write : CD-R 40X(6000KB/sec) maxmium by P-CAV
ReWrite : CD-RW 24X(3600KB/sec) maxmium by Z-CLV in UltraSpeed disc
Read : 40X(6000KB/sec) maxmium by CAV
Access Time : 160msThe media you can properly burn to is specified in the under the DVD Family and CD Family.
Do you understand? If you do, we'll proceed to discuss Nero.

Any computer should be able to read those disks "IF" they have a DVD rom - but not in a CD rom.
Just thought I would mention this in case. .and the DVD media -R or +R will almost always be common to almost all DVD players - there will be exceptions though - must check the box or of course try it - if it doesn;t work that would be a good indicator.
If you ever decide to back up your DVD movies you will want DVD Shrink - it is free.
Good luck

One more thing I would like to add to your replies. Until you get the hang of it, burn your programs to a DVD-RW or DVD+RW this way, if you mess up all you have to do is erase it and try again. You won't be burning a coaster! I have made backups of my movies and have had no coasters. I DID use an RW for the first few times to get the hang of it. The programs I use are,
DVD Decrypter, DVD2ONE, and Nero Burn.
Thanks,
Jim

Just a quick note with burning data to DVD disk.
+R format is a better type of format when burning data (ie - not movies).+R can be used for movies although the majority of home theater DVD players don't have the ability to read +R disks so hence why -R formats are the preferred media type.
As to why you can't view your data on other machines - the answer is little known secret
that can be summised as follows;
-R formats when burning data become unstable if the disk session is left open.
You need to burn and close the session for it to be visable on other DVD burner. Otherwise they are unpredictable. So in short try to use the disk entirely and not allow multisession on it. +R format disks are a lot friendlier and will quite happily accept multisession burns without giving you grief on other machines whilst trying to access them. (This is not a fault of Nero - infact Nero is a leader in this technology and try and avoid Roxio's EZ creator programs - they pose more headaches than functionality) Try and use quality disks. Firmware on certain drives disallow certain makes of disks to be used. Often cheap brands who's manufacturers avoid paying royalty's to the creators of DVD. There are firmware update availables for most drives but very carefully making sure you have the manufactures firmware update for the correct DVD model(Nero Info Tool is great in assertaining the correct information about your drives) otherwise it could render your drive useless.Regards Soldano
