By the way, if you try to install home edition on dual processor this problem can occur also.

I encountered the STOP: C0000221 Unknown Hard Error complaining about the ntdll.dll file, but my solution was different. I found the problem which was similar to a posting on the MS siteabout installing WinME. Turns out that my two very similar sticks of 128MB PC 133 SDRAM were by different manufacturers and caused a conflict.

I removed one of the two stick of memory, fired up the install and have not had any problems since.

I'm getting the same problem in Windows XP 2600. I've tried reinstalling everyway possible and I keep getting the Unknown Hard Error ntdll.dll and a blue screen after XP tries to reboot during installation for the 1st time.

I too have a maxtor 40gb hard disk...but I refuse to believe there is anything wrong with it.

I had the same problem with the pro version of XP.
I changed the first boot in the bios to cdrom, put the WinXP cd in and booted from cd. Then delete the partition and re-format.
Hope this helps.

I had the same error on the startup of the installation. I changed the CDROM reader to a better one and it worked fine... I know, it's very strange, but it was that... So, good luck with this "bug less" OS...

Hi guys!!!

I got the same error when i tried to install Windows XP Pro 2 days ago. I did everything and nothing worked. I had bought some new hardware, and i started disconnecting them and replacing them with my old hardware.

Well... the error message stopped coming when i removed my new NVIDIA GeForce2 MX400.

Though i never got Windows XP Pro installed because of other problems. "will tell you all about that in another discussion" i atleast solved this problem.

It was a ordinary manufactoring error. So i went to the store and got a new card.

I had the blue stop screen "c0000221 unknown hard error\systemroot\system32\ntdll.dll" but mine was with the windows 2000 operating system.
I found that after unpartitioning and formatting the hard drive and then changing the ide cable from ide 1 to ide 2 on the motherboard it loaded the operating system without a problem.
Give it a go, l have not had a problem with windows 2000 since.

To Kancho - I have installed WinXP a LOT over the last couple of weeks, and the error just started happening when I installed my Maxtor 40GB disk. Small world, huh? That's the problem.
