Subject: XP to Vista upgrade: disk error OS: Windows XPCPU/Ram: P4 2.66 ghz 1.5gbs Ram |
Comment: I'm running Dual booting 2 windows XP partitions after my graphic card upgrade required me to upgrade WinME to XP. Now i want to install Vista. The problem comes when i want to do an upgrade install and it get to expanding files in which the computer reboots. Upon rebooting it comes up with a "Disk Read Error: press Ctrl-Alt-Del to restart". using windows XP recovery console lead me to find that chkdsk is finding many nonzero file entries. running Fixmbr and fixboot allowed me to boot into windows XP. Now the question is how can i get past this error to install Vista?. i have many files on that windows XP partition that i'd rather do an upgrade than clean install.

Reply: (edit)I did start the upgrade from within Win XP. While getting to the "Expanding files" portion of the installation, the computer automatically reboots as if it encountered a locked file.

Reply: (edit)ok... first link assumes that i have vista already installed which i dont, and that i'm installing XP in a dual boot config which i aint. second link, also assumes i have vista installed first, but there is another page where it tells how to install vista with XP preinstalled. Problem is that it assumes that the user is going to do a clean install hence they talk about paritioning with GPART. Any other solutions?

Reply: (edit)Do you have FAT32 as the file system since you have upgraded from ME to XP ? If so, convert to NTFS first and then do the upgrade to Vista. Sometimes converting to NTFS in Win XP creates 512 byte clusters which are not good. Beware of that. Regards suatcini

Reply: (edit)Problem is solved.. Basically you must use the convert command line to convert to NTFS instead of third party tools like partition magic.
