Hi, Ive recently tried opening the win.ini file in Vista and erasing the "garbage" and "junk" files that are saved there and when i replace or save as a blank file it keeps telling me i cannot create that file. Its already created isnt it? When i try to replace with a blank page it tells me i cant. So, my question is. How do i save the win.ini file as a blank page? In XP u can do it with no problem what so ever. Thanks in advance.

Why do you want to erase the contents Win.ini? In my experience, there should only be 7 or 8 lines there in Vista's win.ini and they are for compatibility with older applications.
Is there any particular reason you want or need a blank win.ini?

I agree with Alex2002. Although, I'm sure if you "take ownership" of the file you'll be able to edit it.

Perhaps if you tell us what led you to want to modify the win.ini file, we may be able to help you better. Your original post gave us no clues.

Alright, I'll give my shot in the dark here ... I guess you are trying to tweak a 16-bit based game program to suddenly work in Windows Vista 32-bit or 64-bit system, correct?

Update. I never knew you can install games for Windows in Vista Safe Mode - with M$ blessing. Try that instead, you never know it may work. See Method 7 in the article below.

The reason i wanted to make the file blank was because of my experiences with XP is that "junk","garbage", and unwanted files store them self here because its a system start-up file. I took a back-up of the files on Vista already just incase i needed to use them but i dont think i will anyway. But i did figure it out. In xp in the run box if u simply typed the win.ini file it would allow u to edit from there and save it. In vista the only why to edit is to pull up the sysedit files via run box and its free to edit and add/remove all files. But thanks anyway for reading my post. :)
