To see what the blue screen says, when you get to the safe mode menu select the 'disable automatic restart.....' option. If it goes directly to safe mode then you need to tap the F8 key as the computer starts in order to access the menu.
To perform a repair you either need a Vista installation disk, or boot to your working, cloned, drive and in the all programs/maintenance menu select the option to create a Vista rescue disc. Once you have this disk then boot your non-working drive from it and when you get to the 'install' screen look for 'repair my computer' in the bottom left corner - go through that and it should hopefully repair your installation.
If it cannot repair it then check your harddrive using the manufacturer's diagnostic program, available from their website, to check you haven't got a failing drive.
