XP mainly because you only have 512MB RAM.

XpUser,

I think he has 1GB ... 1028 ... sic ... (1024MB), but I agree that XP is better suited for the machine than Vista.

You could be rite but I believe 512MB is the standard factory-installed RAM that can be upgrade to a max of 2GB.

You can run Vista Home Basic or Vista Starter edition quite well with the addition of a compatible USB flash drive for superfetching purposes.

But you better run the upgrade advisor before installing Vista or visit HP web site if Vista is supported for your PC.

If you want the most speed and fewer problems go for XP

XP.

Vista was built for moderate systems. Unless you plan on upgrading the processor to a dual core, at least a 4200+ X2, add another gb of ram and a decent graphics card then you are much better off with XP.

Vista will be better if you use 1GB RAM with that PC, Because I've just bought this dell lap with Vista Home Premium OS.

Lap's Spec:
Dell Inspiron 1501
AMD Turion 64. 2GHz
1GB RAM
ATi RadeonX 1150 (Radeon Xpress 200M)
80GB HDD.
DVD+RW.
OS: Win Vista Home Premium
