Hi,
I started the defualt defragmenter in windows vista. I thought it would complete in about 4 hours on both my HDDs, but I waited from morning to evening but the defragmenter did not complete.
I had to shut down my compuer before the defragment was complete.
I tried it again, and it took long again and this time I forgot about it and mistakenly turned off my computer again during the defragment process.I would like to know from you guys if I should continue to use the Vista Defragmenter using the command prompt and defragment one drive at a time, or should i download some freeware defragmenter for windows.
I would prefer the vista defragmenter because it would arrange the files in a way that is best for vista.
What do you guys think is the best thing for me to do in the long run?
Is it ok to schedule a defrag everyday, and if I shut down my computer mid way will the defrag continue the next day, or will it start all over again?
Or do you think I should booth into XP and defragment all drives there, including the vista drive. I just read somewhere that vista uses some new features like "super fetch" so i think that will only work if the vista defragmenter re-arranges the programs as vista wants. Thanks to all,

you can boot to safe mode, run defrag there uninterupted
i only defrag twice per year.
these newer systems don't need it more than that

Thanks for the suggestion.
I think I am going back to XP though.
Vista seems to be getting slower each time I log onto it.
There seem to be some basic flaws in vista, it will need a major service pack update.I dont think its my hardware, becasue vista ran great the first few times, but now its getting slower for no apparant reason.
Also, I today morning I downloaded diskeeper 2007 trial and defragmented all my drives. Then I check the vista defragmenter and it said I should defragment again because it could help performance, and the vista defragmenter took 4+ hours again and after it completed the message was that I should defragment again because it could improve performance.

I don't know where mountain got his info. Read the industry's most-respected Blackviper's Vista Super Tweak Rule No. 10 HERE.

The only useful suggestion that black viper provides is to disable user account control.
Vista will run pretty good on any 256MB vedio card. My motherboard is over 3 years old and vista ultimate runs smooth.
I have detected my problem, its with the vedio card drivers. When started to vista, the desktop appeard and then the monitor turned off and turned on and I got a message "Your vedio card driver had stopped working and then started up again".
After updating the vista drivers from nvidia thinigs have got worse, the original drivers bundled with vista seemed to work better. Now I get black boxes behind windows when swithcing application, and the task bar flickers, etc. I have to wait till nvidia release better drivers or vista realse some updates.
