Reply: (edit)OK - you've got Intel's DP965LV (Love Valley P) motherboard with the Intel High Definition (SigmaTel STAC9271) Audio Codec. As stated in the link from Orbital, the base driver for this IHD Audio is now a common operating system driver provided by Microsoft & that should include all Vista versions. But you can try this & see if it works. How To Ask Questions The Smart Way

Reply: (edit)I just got off the phone with Gateway and they said to download the Ac'97 Audio codec for Vista from Realtek. I downloaded this and tried to install it by clicking the "set up" app but it freezez midway and I keep getting a Windows warning not to install something from an outside publisher. i hit install anyway and it still refuses to move!

Reply: (edit)careful with 'modded' and unsigned drivers for hardware that is not HDCP compliant. vista may lock your system. not a bug but a 'feature' to protect digital content. Today's subliminal thought is: 'Calm down ... it's only ones and zeros.'

Reply: (edit)Just a hunch, uninstall all the drivers and refresh the device manager by that I mean go in there, right-click on anything and hit scan for hardware changes. You should get the found new hardware wizard - but let it search for the best drivers (by itself) & let's see what it installs and how that sounds. How To Ask Questions The Smart Way

Reply: (edit)maybe this will shed some light on your 'sound is still crap' problem with HD audio driver. http://www.cs.auckland.ac.nz/~pgut0... "Vista's content protection mechanism only allows protected content to be sent over interfaces that also have content-protection facilities built in. Currently the most common high-end audio output interface is S/PDIF (Sony/Philips Digital Interface Format). Most newer audio cards, for example, feature TOSlink digital optical output for high-quality sound reproduction, and even the latest crop of motherboards with integrated audio provide at least coax (and often optical) digital output. Since S/PDIF doesn't provide any content protection, Vista requires that it be disabled when playing protected content [Note E]. In other words if you've sunk a pile of money into a high-end audio setup fed from an S/PDIF digital output, you won't be able to use it with protected content. Say you've just bought Pink Floyd's "The Dark Side of the Moon", released as a Super Audio CD (SACD) in its 30th anniversary edition in 2003, and you want to play it under Vista. Since the S/PDIF link to your amplifier/speakers is regarded as insecure for playing the SA content, Vista disables it, and you end up hearing a performance by Marcel Marceau instead of Pink Floyd." Today's subliminal thought is: 'Calm down ... it's only ones and zeros.'

Reply: (edit)chances are that support in vista is only 'crippled' when hd content is played through non-hdcp-compliant hardware. Today's subliminal thought is: 'Calm down ... it's only ones and zeros.'

Reply: (edit)SUCCESS!! Ok, after almost a week off trying to resolve this, i finally got it!! Intel has an updated Sigmatel audio driver for Vista on their website http://mysearch.intel.com/support/d... Download according to your motherboard. Before installing, uninstall any existing audio drivers from Device Manager. Then install the new downloaded driver. Once installed, go again into Device Manager, select the new Sigmatel driver, and select the update driver option. Vista will ask whether to look online or on the PC for updates. Select the PC option. Vista will find the new updates on your PC and install them. And viola, you have perfect high def sound ;-) whew!

Reply: (edit)May I join in? I am having the same problem. I tried Brotherpsych's method of uninstalling the Intel audio driver, rebooting, and reinstalling, but still Vista Business thinks I have no Audio Devices Installed. On the other hand, Device Manager shows SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC as working fine, and having the most up to date driver. Reply: (edit)The Solution! (For some of us, anyway). If your Intel motherboard loses audio after installing Vista, it is because "this operating system provides embedded support for the audio interface on your Intel(R) Desktop Board DG965WH, therefore the drivers are not required. To begin troubleshooting this problem, please uninstall Intel(R) drivers (From 'Programs and Features' in the Control Panel; remove 'Sigmatel Audio'), and try rebooting the system, to let the OS load the embedded drivers." It worked for me. Vista Business Core2Duo E6600 2 GB Kinston DDR2 667 Nexus Quiet Breeze cas3
