I just upgraded my "Vista Capable" Windows XP Media Center OS to Vista Home Premium and have lost sound! I have the Intel Audio Studio application and apparently it doesnt work with Vista even though I got a free upgrade to Vista with the PC! How do i get sound to work with Vista?? thanks
Your system is "Vista Capable" & your integrated audio is Vista compatible, however there is no separate Vista audio driver posted on Gateway's Support website at this time. However, if you know what audio chipset is on the motherboard, you may be able to locate a working driver for it.

thanks. Its ridiculous that Gateway has no support for Vista yet when they planned on upgrading it anyway! How do i know what audio chipset is on the motherbaord?

OK - you've got Intel's DP965LV (Love Valley P) motherboard with the Intel High Definition (SigmaTel STAC9271) Audio Codec.
As stated in the link from Orbital, the base driver for this IHD Audio is now a common operating system driver provided by Microsoft & that should include all Vista versions.
But you can try this & see if it works.
Report Offensive Follow Up For Removal
Install the (audio) driver from your gateway supplied disc via XP compatibility mode.

my pc only came with the operating system disc that re-installs the OS. Do i use this? thanks for your help!

I just got off the phone with Gateway and they said to download the Ac'97 Audio codec for Vista from Realtek. I downloaded this and tried to install it by clicking the "set up" app but it freezez midway and I keep getting a Windows warning not to install something from an outside publisher. i hit install anyway and it still refuses to move!
Report Offensive Follow Up For Removal
Download this modded AC ‘97 drivers.
Run the installer in XP compatibility mode and restart. If the installer fails, extract the drivers to a folder with WinRAR and install via the Device Manager.
Restart your computer.
Let's see if that works.
****There's another one here for x64****.

careful with 'modded' and unsigned drivers for hardware that is not HDCP compliant. vista may lock your system. not a bug but a 'feature' to protect digital content.

how do i start XP in compatibility mode? thanks for all the help btw. still no sound and vista wont let me install the ac97 files! this is ridiculous!

i installed the Sigmatel Audio driver through Application Recovery and still no sound! The software itself is the Intel Audio Studio but I dont see it on the Application Recovery software list.
Report Offensive Follow Up For Removal
OK! i found an updated Sigmatel audio driver (for XP though) on gateway's website and installed it. I now have sound but CHOPPY and weird! what the????
Report Offensive Follow Up For Removal
It isn't much, but at least you are making some progress.............LOL
Report Offensive Follow Up For Removal
ok - i tried to install the ac'97 audio driver and i get a pop up saying this driver only works with Vista and Vista 64 bit! I have Vista Home Premium! Does this mean this driver doesnt work with Vista Premium?
Report Offensive Follow Up For Removal
Just a hunch, uninstall all the drivers and refresh the device manager by that I mean go in there, right-click on anything and hit scan for hardware changes.
You should get the found new hardware wizard - but let it search for the best drivers (by itself) & let's see what it installs and how that sounds.

Realtek list both standard AC97 and High Definition (HD) Audio Drivers ie Azelia!

yeah i tried the high def audio driver from realtek but no luck - sound is still crap!
Report Offensive Follow Up For Removal
maybe this will shed some light on your 'sound is still crap' problem with HD audio driver.
http://www.cs.auckland.ac.nz/~pgut0...
"Vista's content protection mechanism only allows protected content to be sent
over interfaces that also have content-protection facilities built in.
Currently the most common high-end audio output interface is S/PDIF
(Sony/Philips Digital Interface Format). Most newer audio cards, for example,
feature TOSlink digital optical output for high-quality sound reproduction,
and even the latest crop of motherboards with integrated audio provide at
least coax (and often optical) digital output. Since S/PDIF doesn't provide
any content protection, Vista requires that it be disabled when playing
protected content [Note E]. In other words if you've sunk a pile of money
into a high-end audio setup fed from an S/PDIF digital output, you won't be
able to use it with protected content.Say you've just bought Pink Floyd's "The Dark Side of the Moon", released as a
Super Audio CD (SACD) in its 30th anniversary edition in 2003, and you want to
play it under Vista. Since the S/PDIF link to your amplifier/speakers is
regarded as insecure for playing the SA content, Vista disables it, and you
end up hearing a performance by Marcel Marceau instead of Pink Floyd."Today's subliminal thought is: 'Calm down ... it's only ones and zeros.'
Report Offensive Follow Up For Removal
So basically my Sigmatel high def audio will not work with Vista?
Report Offensive Follow Up For Removal
chances are that support in vista is only 'crippled' when hd content is played through non-hdcp-compliant hardware.
Today's subliminal thought is: 'Calm down ... it's only ones and zeros.'

SUCCESS!! Ok, after almost a week off trying to resolve this, i finally got it!! Intel has an updated Sigmatel audio driver for Vista on their website http://mysearch.intel.com/support/d...
Download according to your motherboard. Before installing, uninstall any existing audio drivers from Device Manager. Then install the new downloaded driver. Once installed, go again into Device Manager, select the new Sigmatel driver, and select the update driver option. Vista will ask whether to look online or on the PC for updates. Select the PC option. Vista will find the new updates on your PC and install them. And viola, you have perfect high def sound ;-) whew!

Trust me, I can somewhat relate to what you just went through with Vista & a fully compatible sound driver, I went through a similar process with my Audigy card & Vista.
Between M$ & Creative, someone just got things straightened out the other day & I now have unfettered and fully working driver too & man! was I finally glad......taps wood quickly.
BTW, three more responses & you become the unofficial Dean of the Vista Learning Center faculty here on CN..............LOL

I have read all this page with a lot of care, because I have the exact same problem.
Unfortunately, it's on a desktop, and it says that no output device has been installed. Is it an upgrade problem?

It would be nice to post the actual model of your Dell machine - it does help.
If this doean't take care of it, go to this link and pay close attention to "Rynorak" & "aegies" comments, the solution described there should work for you.

May I join in? I am having the same problem. I tried Brotherpsych's method of uninstalling the Intel audio driver, rebooting, and reinstalling, but still Vista Business thinks I have no Audio Devices Installed. On the other hand, Device Manager shows SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC as working fine, and having the most up to date driver.

The Solution! (For some of us, anyway).
If your Intel motherboard loses audio after installing Vista, it is because "this operating system provides embedded support for the audio interface on your Intel(R) Desktop Board DG965WH, therefore the drivers are not required. To begin troubleshooting this problem, please uninstall Intel(R) drivers (From 'Programs and Features' in the Control Panel; remove 'Sigmatel Audio'), and try rebooting the system, to let the OS load the embedded drivers."
It worked for me.
