using vista home premium on laptop and had an issue downloading update: KB905866 (update for windows mail junk email filter)
I went to microsoft help and support page and found this about it: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/905866
need some help though... since my system is x86 should I download the first definition update? also... I found some other people on the help and support page that wrote in about this same issue and the replies were unclear about this possibly being a conflict with other software such as spybot and ad-aware on their systems. any truth to this since I too am using these?

First of all, DO NOT download x64-based system package if your computer is x86-based !
If you get this update from the Windows Update Center, then you shouldn't have any trouble with the installation.
If i'm not wrong, windows update center checks your computer to see if the updates are compatible with your hardware so if it finds any conflict the updates will not be available to you.Microsoft Windows Mail Junk E-mail and Phishing Filter has nothing to do with spyware so you should have no problems installing it (DO NOT INSTALL x64-based system package on a x86-based system).
--------
To be on the safe side, only download updates available in the windows update center.
Don't search for updates directly from the internet pages !
--------If you don't have any conflicts, this update should be available in the windows update center as i installed it myself 2 days ago.

hello JCS618 ,
Yes you should down load the first one not the 64 one ,
As for ad-aware I cannot say as I no longer use it , spy bot s & d ( no tea timer ) I do and no problems here .Regards

Hellfire,
My fault, I should of listed that I didn't go on a "search spree" for this update. I just went into my menu bar and clicked on windows update. I just figured that most would of figured that out on here.Jack Frost46,
I will take your advice and go to the download page and download the first one in question. The reason that I asked about any conflicts... I don't want to go through the same issue as I already have with no success downloading this update if I had to either disable, or remove software such as spybot, or ad-aware.I will report back how the download went tomorrow.

Here is what I found out today...
I went to microsoft help and support to download this update. It also failed to load from the site. So, I went into my update history and it shows that update KB905866 for the month of September was updated without any issues, but the one for October continues to fail? Then I read on microsoft help and support that this issue may be in the System Update Readiness Tool (KB947821) since the error code I was receiving was 80073712. Figuring that this may be my issue I tried to download the system readiness tool. I waited over 30 minutes for this to download, but it only reached 3/4 and quit so I canceled out on the update.
Any ideas on what to do at this point?
I contacted windows help and support and gave them details about the issue. When I submitted my question it took info from my computer and at the end asked me if I would like a copy. I now have a icon on my desktop (file cabinet). Guess I need to know what to do with this after the issue is resolved?

Well , I would right click on it go to properties and see what kind of file it is ,
And double click on the file see what it says ,
I would say the up date most likely to have affected both spybot & adaware is the malicious software removal tool . Not that I think Ad-aware is malicious....indeed it seems very benign , even to malware . However the m$ software may thought so.
Regards

I did some more digging to see if I could find this issue.
First:
I did a restore back to the point before I did the update in which there were 7 items. I then downloaded all updates except for the one with the issue.Second: I uninstalled both ad-aware and spybot and then shut the computer down.
Third: I started the computer back up, went back into windows update to download and... IT STILL WOULD NOT WORK.
So it has nothing to do with either ad-aware, or spybot on my system and it has nothing to do with the other updates from windows.
I went to the cabinet folder that windows update put on my desktop. There are 51 items within that cabinet.
The best I can do now is just wait till windows update contacts me back to see if they can solve this issue.
Thank You for your help on here. If I get this issue fixed I will tell all.

The ad-aware software is not a dangerous software.
Spybot is not dangerous either.
If you use google to search for "80073712 windows update error", you will see that you probably have some faulty window drivers. As i tried to read on several pages about this problem i can see that to fix this problem you may have to repair install your windows.
Ps: I don't know if your files will be available after the install, but maybe somebody else know ?
All i know is that the problem you are having is not because of spybot or ad-aware.
There is 1 thing i can reccomend you to do, and maybe it helps you as it did to some others.
Try to open the "Search" dialog on the start menu button and enter "CMD".
When the CMD file appears, right click on it and choose "RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR".
When the program is running, write "SFC /SCANNOW" and press enter. Then your computer will search for corrupted windows files and replaces them with good ones.
If this don't help then i'm afraid i can't help you as i don't know how ?

Hellfire,
I have read many issues about this problem on the internet and there are many different replies on how to fix it, but "which one" is still in question.I highly doubt that it has anything to do with my laptop since I just purchased it at the beginning of September from Dell. If I used it anymore than a dozen times I am lucky and the only items I have put on it is ad-aware, spybot, and a registry cleaner along with the important windows updates.
I did what you requested with CMD, but it did not find any errors on my system.

Have you tried to install the latest windows update agent ?
If not you can try to do it here :
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946...
Maybe it works then ?
