windows explorer slow to open desktop icons

Windows explorer normally VERY Slow in opening any desktop icon (15 seconds). Fairly often I get a message saying that Windows Explorer is not responding and needs to close and restart. Any suggestions out there? All programs perform fine and all files once finally open seem fine. I just seem to have an issue opening anything on the desktop. Please advise....
