No if you have a good firewall, anti-virus and spyware removal program then you don't need Windows Defender. Windows Defender won't conflict with firewall, anti-virus or spyware removal programs. Windows Defender is good for novice computer users that don't know a lot about pc's or threats, it adds an extra layer of basic protection for those types of computer users.

Windows Defender comes built-in with Vista. Fortunately, it can be used alone or along with other anti-spyware tools that you prefer without causing any conflict.

I left it enabled on this machine because it does not seem to have any negative impact on the machine. I would suggest you leave it enabled as well, but if you are really averse to the tool you can just as easily disable it.

- Open Windows Defender by clicking the Start button, clicking All Programs & then clicking Windows Defender.

- Click Tools & then click Options.

- Under Administrator options, select or clear the Use Windows Defender check box & then click Save.

***If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

I have never had a problems with Defender running with any of my ad-aware, anti-virus or firewalls.

But I have turned it off from automaticly running in the background by going to the startup config since I never use it.

I think it's optional if you want to free up resouces, turn it off. there really isn't any need for it if you have better spyware software. Ad-Aware 2007, spybot etc do better jobs than Windows Defender at catching stuff.

So how can you rank Ad-Aware 2007, Spybot and Windows Defender? Which one is best and which one is not?

I had a mouse-cursor erratic problem on my HP Pavilion Home Premium Vista. It was driving me nuts.
I disabled the Real Time checking of Defender and I am now on my third week since and the erratic mouse is no longer an issue.
I do use BitDefender Antivirus 2008, use AdAware 2007 and Windows Defender without the Real Time feature.

ZoneAlarm, BitDefender, Scan with Spyware Doctor, AVG, SpyBot
